Team Building and Communication

I'm designing a team building and communication programme for 30+ delegates. I'm aiming for it to be interactive, high energy and fun. There are 5 sub-teams across this group who are in one overall department. The director of this group is in the process of having them move to self-managing

I've some ideas of activities to run but would welcome input and suggestions, thank you.
Jennifer

Hi,
I too was going to suggest using Discovery Insights. I have done this quite a lot recently and got great results. However, the previous post is right it does depend on your budget. I really like the maze idea and think i may use it myself. Another good group exercise is an alphabet treasure hunt. Give each group a piece of flip chart paper and they have to complete the alphabet with objects that they can find. I also put in a series of envelopes with things that they need to find from each other. One envelope could be "C must be a claim to fame, discuss in your group who has a claim to fame and be ready to tell the whole group" "S must a be a silly secret, whats the best mistake someone has ever made" You can then add in some more elements where they have to communicate with other teams to get some of the letters.
Hope this helps Ric.

Hi Jennifer

The 'zoom' exercise is quite a good quick exercise for a large group on communication and the importance of clarity, language, asking questions, working co=operately.

You would need to buy two copies of the zoom book from amazon (one so you have the answer as a trainer!) and one that you cut up into individual pictures. There are 33 images I believe but you can drop out a couple of include yourself and for slightly smaller groups you can give them 2 images together. They are not allowed to show the image to someone, they have to describe it and then get themselves into the right sequence. It's quite a fun high energy exercise, needs some space to move around and takes around 30 minutes to run and debrief.

Hi Jennifer, depending on your budget, you could faciliate a discovery Insights workshop which is all about communication preferences, adapting and connecting with others that are different to you and learning about each others strengths and values they bring to the team.

However; If budget is not available then you could do the 'The Maze' exercise by splitting the team into two and giving each team a stack of chairs, string and anything else that can be used as an obstacle (newspapers etc).

Each team has to design a maze using the resources. The teams swap over (thats the bit you dont tell them!) and then they nominate 1 person from the team to wear a blind fold and team members have to guide that person through the maze without them hitting any obstacles. This can work with getting 3 team members through it but then you will need to get the mazes re-arranged and swap over the teams again. I used this excerise a few times and it does get noisey and you do need a lot of space. However it does help to improve communication, build trust and create inter-dependency which may fit your Directors brief. the Debrief; how did you work together as a team to meet the task, what were some of the issues that you had to resolve, where were the strenghts of the team and what could you do differently?. How did it feel to be blind folded and put trust in team members to get you through? etc etc. Hope this helps!!
