Employee Engagement Questions

The question was posted by Jennifer on 18/11/2014 17:38:30

A client has asked for help in compiling a valid set of questions to assess employee engagement in their organisation.

They don't want to do something huge, but the questions must be valid (phrasing of the questions, scoring system and questions that staff can trust).

Any suggestions and references/resources greatly welcomed.

thank you, Jennifer

Hi Jennifer - I use a great little company call Scancapture. They have devised a 10 question survey for consultants and L&D people to use. They do it all for you and are really quick, excellent quality, will analyse the data and give you reports and posters for between Ā£5-10 per head within 48 hrs of the survey closing - why would you do it yourself? I have used them now for numerous clients. and run focus groups to tease out the issues in more details behind the results. This then gives me a great platform to devise any L&D interventions or to challenge the leaders. They can do the survey hard copy or electronic no price difference and will put the company logo on it. It has made my life so easy. Steve Smith is the MD. Definitely work checking them out at www.scancapture.co.uk.
They also do customer surveys.

Hi we use People Gauge, they link engagement to Maslow, giving the results a different perspective. Have a look at their website http://peoplegauge.com.

many thanks Liz. Ironically this client used to run the Best Companies process but can no longer afford it!

Hi Jennifer

You may find some of the materials and information from Best Companies useful and a starting point for some questions. Have a look at www.b.co.uk, especially their eight 'factors'.
Best wishes

I found this report very useful in terms of employee engagement factors http://www.ihrim.org/Pubonline/Wire/Dec13/GlobalWorkplaceReport_2013.pdf

View page 15, it details the 12 questions gallup ask when assessing engagement.

Very simple and easy to build engagement strategies around too.

Hope it's useful.

I'd agree with all that has been said about survey monkey. from experience the other thing to note is that if you want to repeat the survey - which is a good idea - then it might be worth subscribing to survey monkey - the cost isn't that high and it means you can save the surveys for future use. companies I've worked with have used it to survey customers and it is also as a pre and post learning evaluation - so a useful little tool.
the other comment is about follow through - if they haven't already done so then you might want to suggest to them that the survey is just the start point and your client might want to think about what they plan to do with the results before they launch.

hope this helps

Hi Jennifer,

Have a look at Survey Monkey - we've used it recently and it has some standard surveys around things like this. In fact, we've just used one of their templates as the basis for our own employee engagement survey.

Hope this helps.
