One of my delegates said this on a recent workshop. It was just after I had said, “That was
something which hadn't hit me before – gosh, I've learnt something today”. And Wendy said, “Yes – every day is a school
day, isn't it?”
What she said feels more right for us as trainers and
facilitators than it does for most people. We should be open to just soak up every experience to add colour to our
events. I'm sure a lot of you do this
already. Whether you use the experience
to tell a story to enhance the theory, to extend a metaphor or just to start to
have your delegates see things with a more connected viewpoint, it is always
worthwhile. Here’s a couple of mine,
linked in a way.
What I learnt Yesterday
The more you give, the
more you will get
I had three instances in about 4 hours yesterday – two from
other trainer associates I know, and one from Trainers Talk. All were asking for advice and one for
materials for a coaching session. About
an hour's work all told, now I am totting it up. That is irrelevant, really. But straight away, I not only felt good about
the giving, I got advice for about another 30 minutes from one of them
regarding a new web site I am pulling together. I am sure that may have happened anyway, but my giving may have
accelerated the process? I know a lot of
trainers guard their materials with absolute zealousness. If Rod had that attitude, we wouldn't have Trainers' Library! The content is not
the biggest thing you have – all ideas are steal-able, and I bet we all have
things in our tool box that we didn't originate? (Come on…). So there’s another learning – remember, you are the biggest difference,
not the stuff you are using.
Gosh, I think I can feel a rush of blogs to the head…would
you like more?
