Motivation game ideas?

Hi all,
I'm just writing a short session on Motivation using Herzberg's hygiene factors to illustrate the concept....and now I'm after an exercise/game to get my delegates (managers in the catering industry) to come up with ideas on how to motivate their own team and show an understanding of the 'maintenance' side of things. I've hit a creativity wall (I'm new to this site and can't seem to find much except the exercise re their own motivation using Herzberg) so if anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate the help.
Thanks in advance,
Jo

Hi Jo,

I'd recommend looking at the series in Trainers' Library on Employee Engagement - I'm sure the final one in particular - Building Engagement - might a useful and thought provoking exercise to include. (http://www.glasstap.com/trainerslibrary/training_doc_details.aspx?doc=555)

Another useful exercise around Motivation and engagement is The Card Factory.

Thanks so much Sarah, that looks like a great exercise to draw out personal motivation and one I may definitely try at some point. I am however looking for ideas of what a manager could do to motivate their own team...I know that many factors will be the same so I may adapt your idea! Many thanks.

I run an exercise where I give people an A% card divided into 9 squares. I then say " Take a few minutes to think about all the sources of motivation in your work environment. That is: anything that motivates you to perform more effectively or more efficiently. Try to come up with nine different factors or things which have a positive motivational benefit for you in your job, and place one in each of the nine areas on the card. What makes you work harder? Work smarter? What makes you come in earlier? Stay later? What makes you take your job so seriously? What makes you give your all?. I have a bag with about 40 factors written on individual pieces of paper. I pull out one at a time and if they have it on their card they can highlight it. Once they have a row or column they call Bingo. It usually takes quite some time to get bingo. We then debrief the game, dividing them into groups, they have to share their list and write up a flipchart with unique and shared motivators. The end result is they realize there are far more unique than shared factors so the importance of uncovering their people's motivating factors is a critical management skill

Thanks ever so much Wendy, I did see this one but isn't quite what I'm looking for as I'm after something re an exercise to generate ideas on how to motivate others and how to ensure minimal demotivation....If I find anything else, I will of course share.
Kind regards,
Jo

Hi Jo
I am also adding a piece on motivation into a training session and am using the Jump icebreaker from the glasstap library. If you do find another piece could you please share?
Hope this is helpful?
Kind Regards
Wendy
