Research & Design estimating guidelines

Hi everyone,
Does anyone have or can anyone point me in the right direction for guidance/research/latest thinking on how long it takes to research & design new Learning material plesae? We are a small L&D team with huge demands placed upon us. We find research and design time is continually being questioned.
I have the 1:8 ratio in mind i.e. 1 hour of facilitation = 8 hours of research and design time, but I would like to back that up with science/proof if at all possible. If you have anything on the difference between a topic you know versus a topic you are not familiar with/out of touch with; that too would be very interesting to see.
Thank you in advance
Rebecca

Interesting question Rebecca. I know when I have researched this previously the 8:1 ratio seems to be the 'industry standard' for designing from scratch.

If you want to do your own survey to provide supporting information, I will be happy to help publicise.

All the best

Hi Rebecca, I have the same issue and recently had an organisation approach me to develop a 30 hour bespoke course for an oil company on implementing their strategic plan but had not budgeted for any design time....I found some ASTD guideline here that may help: http://www.astd.org/Publications/Newsletters/Learning-Circuits/Learning-Circuits-Archives/2009/08/Time-to-Develop-One-Hour-of-Training
